Choosing Wisely NL: A Collaborative Effort

The Translational and Personalized Medicine Initiative (TPMI) is a large-scale research initiative that will provide enhanced, personalized patient care in Newfoundland and Labrador. The overall goal of this initiative is a collaborative approach to increase appropriate health resource utilization. Baseline projects of the TPMI have already identified important areas where change is needed in our provincial healthcare system. To design interventions to reduce low-value care, the TPMI is working closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, the provincial government, regional health authorities, patients and the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information to initiate the Choosing Wisely NL program. This program will use recommendations from the Canadian Geriatrics Society to enhance drug utilization behaviours in long-term care. Choosing Wisely NL will design and implement interventions to target local priorities in the areas of stroke care, laboratory utilization and imaging tests. As this program evolves, we will implement additional recommendations identified by the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign. Choosing Wisely NL will adopt a multi-strategy approach that actively involves healthcare providers, patients, clinicians and funding agencies to design acceptable and sustainable strategies to reduce the inappropriate use of tests and treatments in Newfoundland and Labrador’s healthcare system.
