Canadian Institute for Health Information: Pan-Canadian Indicators of Overuse

Choosing Wisely Canada has partnered with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) to leverage CIHI’s ability to measure/compare Choosing Wisely recommendation across multiple Canadian jurisdictions using administrative data. Currently, CIHI is working on developing methodology to measure utilization rates associated with 7 recommendations. For May’s webinar CIHI reviewed 3 recommendations that are being measured across multiple regions; mammography screening, antipsychotic use for insomnia in kids and preoperative testing in low risk surgery, through a collaborative titled, Choosing Wisely: Making Smart Health Care Decisions. CIHI shared their successes and challenges, both with using administrative data and operationalizing the recommendations, as well as general lessons learned.
