Dr. Christopher Moriates, Co-chair, Costs of Care/ABIM Foundation Teaching Value & Choosing Wisely Challenge, discussed the Choosing Wisely implementation experience at UCSF. In 2013, staff at UCSF reviewed the Choosing Wisely recommendations and determined how well they performed across a number of areas. A review of baseline data revealed good performance related to some of the recommendations, while in other areas, such as unnecessary blood transfusions, opportunities for improvement were identified. UCSF then launched several improvement initiatives, including physician education, a campaign on Blood Utilization Stewardship and a campus-wide program called Caring Wisely to support front-line clinicians in creating their own improvement projects.
