How Urine Tests Drive Antibiotic Overuse Across Health Care Sectors

18 Nov 2025

1:00pm ET - 2:00pm ET

Urine dipsticks and urinalysis are often used to diagnose suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs). But they are often inaccurate in older adults, and the results lead to a cascade of unnecessary testing and antibiotic use. This happens in long-term care, primary care and emergency departments, and the resulting cascade frequently follows the patient across care settings.

Join Choosing Wisely Talks on November 18 at 1 p.m. ET for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. Our panel of experts will discuss why low-value urine testing persists, the impact on antibiotic use, and system-wide strategies to improve practice.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Jerome Leis, Infectious Diseases Physician, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Using Antibiotics Wisely Lead, Choosing Wisely Canada
