Choosing Wisely Newfoundland and Labrador (CWNL) launched in October 2016 and is coordinated by the Translational & Personalized Medicine Initiative (TPMI) at Memorial University. CWNL works in partnership with all provincial Regional Health Authorities, Newfoundland Labrador Center for Health Information (NLCHI), Newfoundland & Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) and Patient Advisory Council (NL SUPPORT).

The current areas of focus for CWNL are:

  • Appropriate use of antibiotics
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Imaging for lower back pain
  • Preoperative testing prior to low-risk surgeries
  • Appropriate use of antipsychotics
  • HLA-B27
  • IgE testing
  • PPIs

Among the change strategies being implemented are campaigns for each area outlined above along with:

  • Physician education
  • Patient education
  • Audit and feedback
