Choosing Wisely Ontario advances local initiatives aimed at reducing unnecessary care and promoting high-value, person centered practices across the province. The work is done in partnership with several leading provincial health agencies, academic institutions, and hospital networks.

Current areas of focus in Ontario include:

• Preoperative testing prior to low-risk surgeries
• Red blood cell transfusions
• Urinary catheter use
• Benzodiazepines in hospital
• Proton pump inhibitors in primary care
• Appropriate prescribing in the long-term care setting
• Antibiotics prescribing
• Inpatient lab testing

Among the change strategies being implemented are:

• Clinician and patient education
• Audit and feedback
• Process changes
• Targeted national programs (Using Blood Wisely, Using Labs Wisely, and Choosing Wisely Canada’s Hospital Designation Program)
