Choosing Wisely Ontario (CWO) is a campaign organized by a steering committee that includes clinicians, administrators, and patient advisors.

The current areas of focus for CWO are:

• Preoperative testing prior to low-risk surgeries
• Red blood cell transfusions
• Urinary catheter use
• Benzodiazepines in hospital
• Proton pump inhibitors in primary care
• Appropriate prescribing in the long-term care setting
• Antibiotics prescribing

Among the change strategies being implemented are:

• Physician education
• Patient education
• Audit and feedback
• Process changes
