Urine dipsticks and routine urinalysis are widely used to assess suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs), despite being unreliable in older adults. Across long-term care, primary care, and hospitals, inappropriate urinalysis testing and/or urine cultures often trigger a cascade of antibiotic use that follows patients between settings.
