Curbing Unnecessary CT Scans for Concussions
12:00pm EST - 1:00pm EST
Concussions are a common complication of head trauma and a frequent reason for emergency department visits. In the pediatric population alone, there are nearly 50,000 diagnosed concussions in children ages 5-19 each year, commonly occurring from sports-related injuries. But a CT scan is often unnecessary for concussions and might even cause more harm than good.
Join Choosing Wisely Talks on April 13 at 12 p.m. ET for a discussion on reducing CT scans for concussions. Experts from the emergency department and sports medicine will discuss this overuse problem as well as provide practical tips for managing concussions in adult and pediatric populations.
Speakers:
- Dr. Laura Purcell, Pediatric Sports Medicine Physician, Grand River Sports Medicine Centre
- Dr. Constance LeBlanc, Emergency Physician and Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, Dalhousie University
