Treating the Side Effects of Drugs with More Drugs: Strategies for Coping with Prescribing Cascades

12:00pm EST - 1:00pm EST

1 in 4 Canadian seniors are prescribed 10 or more drugs, according 2016 report released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), Drug Use Among Seniors in Canada. Seniors taking excess of 10 drugs are 5 times more likely to be hospitalized for adverse drug reactions than those on fewer medications. Join Dr. Barb Farrell, pharmacist in the Geriatric Day Hospital at Bruyère Continuing Care and Scientist with the Bruyère Research Institute in Ottawa, and Dr. Lisa McCarthy, pharmacist and Scientist at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, on Wednesday March 4th, where they will introduce the concept of prescribing cascades, present common examples and discuss the evolving understanding of how to prevent, investigate and manage them.

The learning objectives for this webinar are to:

  1. Define prescribing cascades and list common examples
  2. Discuss clinical considerations when distinguishing circumstances in which prescribing cascades may be appropriate
  3. Use approaches to investigate and manage prescribing cascades
