Unnecessary antibiotic use is a direct contributor to antimicrobial resistance – one of the top 10 threats to global health. In Canada, over 90% of antibiotics are prescribed in the community. The Using Antibiotics Wisely campaign has leveraged antimicrobial stewardship efforts to reduce unnecessary antibiotics for the two most inappropriately treated conditions: respiratory tract infections (RTI) in primary care and urinary tract infections (UTI) in long-term care.
