General deprescribing interventions in older adult populations successfully reduce polypharmacy and have been correlated with improvements in quality of life. Dr. Cara Tannenbaum, the Principal Investigator of the EMPOWER trial, shared the evidence-based benzodiazepine deprescribing tool she created for community-dwelling seniors. Dr. Tannenbaum highlighted lessons learned through her research and clinical experience for participants to hone their skills in motivational interviewing in order to convince patients to deprescribe their benzos and other sedative hypnotics. Alternative treatment strategies were also discussed.
