2024 Choosing Wisely Canada Society Grant Recipients

Seven clinician societies share progress on grant activities related to advancing Choosing Wisely initiatives in practice.

In 2024, Choosing Wisely Canada continued its support of Canadian clinician societies, offering grants of up to $10,000 to advance recommendations and related quality improvement initiatives in practice. Seven societies received funding to support new and continuing projects aimed at meaningful improvements in health care. One year later, these societies are sharing their progress and the impact of their initiatives:

  • Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science: Continued their grant efforts by validating a web-based financial simulation widget that determines savings and waste reduction metrics of implementing Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations.
  • Canadian Critical Care Society: Disseminated and promoted the Choosing Wisely Canada climate-conscious recommendations for critical care through national forums, webinars, submission to a peer-reviewed journal. This includes a  workshop at the World Congress of Intensive and Critical Care.
  • Association for Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada: Completed a survey of members to identify and understand barriers to implementing Choosing Wisely Canada microbiology recommendations, and released Practice Pointers, a national position statement to support practice change accepted into the Journal of the Association for Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease. In addition, they held a series of webinars in collaboration with the Canadian Orthopaedic Association with over 150 members in attendance.
  • Canadian Association of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R): Co-designed a series of seven whiteboard explainer videos and posters to support the Choosing Wisely Canada PM&R recommendations, released on a dedicated health-verified YouTube channel.
  • Canadian Thoracic Society: Conducted a national survey of over 750 inhaler users and health care practitioners to understand the current landscape of climate-conscious inhaler prescribing and disposal practices. Partnered with more than 30 organizations across the country to circulate the invitation to their members.
  • Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine: Hosted a nationally accredited webinar on Seven Sports Medicine Strategies You Should Reevaluate for Improved Care, which drew record attendance. CASEM also developed and disseminated a series of infographics highlighting each of their recommendations.
  • Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA): Created a bilingual national sustainability toolkit, involving over 25 rheumatologists, allied health providers, and patient groups. They also published the results of a Canadian Rheumatology Association Journal Joint Count survey to assess views and interest on addressing climate impact in practice. This work will be shared in an upcoming episode of the CRA podcast, Around the Rheum.

Grant recipients have made great strides throughout 2024-25. Societies will carry this work forward, and we thank them for their commitment and accomplishments over the past year.
