Up to 30% of blood is transfused inappropriately in Canadian hospitals despite best evidence. Not only does this put significant strains on Canada’s blood supply, but it also exposes patients to potential harm.
Launched in 2020, Using Blood Wisely is a national program led by Choosing Wisely Canada in collaboration with Canadian Blood Services and Héma-Québec. The program invites hospitals to compare their red blood cell transfusion practices against national benchmarks and take steps to improve appropriate use.
By conducting audits, implementing practice improvements, and collaborating across clinical teams, many have strengthened the safety and appropriateness of blood use.
This report shares highlights from the past five years of Using Blood Wisely and what’s next in advancing transfusion appropriateness in Canada.
