Lists of Recommendations: Keeping Them Up To Date

Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations are developed by national medical professional societies representing different clinical specialties in Canada. The recommendations identify tests and treatments commonly used in each specialty that are not supported by evidence, and could expose patients to harm.

Keeping the lists up to date with the latest evidence is an important priority for Choosing Wisely Canada. In addition to encouraging professional societies to immediately update their recommendations in the face of any new evidence, there is also an annual review process that takes place each June when professional societies are asked to certify that each recommendation is still (a) relevant and (b) up to date with the latest evidence.

Recommendations that do not meet these criteria are either revised by the society or removed from the list. Each list of Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations now contains information on when it was last updated.
