Only when “absolutely necessary” – reducing unnecessary bloodwork

To help keep patients safe, teams at St. Michael’s Hospital have been working over the past few years on reducing reflexive blood draws – tests that are done unnecessarily and are not contributing to care. The team, led by Dr. Lisa Hicks, Hematologist at St. Michael’s Hospital, has developed a Choosing Wisely Canada toolkit to help others learn from the hospital’s implementation efforts.
