Choosing Wisely Canada has introduced a new program called “Using Labs Wisely” as an initiative to reduce low-value laboratory testing so that health care resources could be effectively allocated to and prioritized for higher-value patient care. In this initial step, the program has identified five core laboratory tests that are considered to be low-value, as they could be reduced or decoupled from more sensitive or specific laboratory tests.
This user-modifiable, Excel-based, resource savings calculator was developed by CADTH to provide decision-makers with insights on the magnitude of health care resources that could be reinvested towards higher-value patient care by quantifying the potential resource savings associated with the reduction of five identified low-value laboratory tests.
